Lil Rev Workshops & Jam - Friday & Saturday

Joining The Jam - Workshop
Friday, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

​Come spend a fun and informative hour with Uke Master and Jam leader Lil Rev as we explore the art of playing well with others. We'll talk about jam etiquette, listening, dynamics, tempo, tuning, repertoire, types of jams, spoken and unspoken jam language, playing by ear and much, much more! if you ever wanted to take part in a bluegrass or old time jam and didn't know where to begin, this hands on class will give you the tools you need to feel confident to do so.

Skill level:  For all instruments. Open to all levels.

Friday Evening - Jam
Friday, 7:45-8:45 p.m.
​

The Friday Evening Jam will feature, 2, 3 and 4 chord standards from the Bluegrass, Folk and Old Time Repertoire. Let Lil Rev choose a song or consider joining our song circle and sharing a traditional piece from your repertoire that's easy for all to follow and has a singable refrain that we can all join in on. This is a slow to medium speed jam so no hot-doggers or song hogs @ this fun song swap. We look forward to seeing you!

Harmonica From Scratch - Workshop
Friday, 9:00-10:00 p.m.

Join National Blues Harp Champ Lil Rev for the best intro to harmonica class you'll ever find.

Rev will teach all the basics for the complete beginner and have you playing in about an hours time. Learn how to hold the harp, lip position, how to get a single note, major scale, simple folk songs, chords and train sound, blues riffs and much more.

"Lil Rev is a harmonica and ukulele wizard." - Elderly Instruments 

Skill level: For all festival attendees who want to learn to play harmonica. For absolute beginners or those who need a basics refresher.


Fiddle Tunes On The Ukulele - Workshop
Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-Noon
 
Join old-time Uke Master Lil Rev for a rollicking hour as we explore the art of playing fiddle tunes on the ukulele. We'll learn a few chestnuts like Boil Em Cabbage Down, Shortning Bread, Old Joe Clark and Cripple Creek. In addition to melody playing Lil Rev will talk about accompanying fiddle-tunes, tunings, and much more. 

Skill level: For ukuleles advanced beginner to intermediate level. Basic familiarity with TAB is required. Click here for a basic "how to play from TAB" lesson and worksheet. If you complete the items in this lesson and practice the worksheet, you will be ready for Lil Rev's Fiddle Tunes On A Ukulele workshop.

Canote Brothers Workshops & Jam  - Saturday

​Backing Up Fiddle Tunes In C, D and F - Workshop
​Saturday, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Fit right in when you bring your uke to an old time jam! Learn several approaches to the Boom-Chuck Rhythm, and learn the all important Freight Train Strum! Then we’ll practice with a Real Live Old Old Time Fiddler!

Skill level: For all instruments. ​Be comfortable and confident with first position chords in the keys of C, D and G and able to keep time while changing between them.

Saturday, 2:15-3:15 p.m.

Old Time and Novelty Song Repertoire!   Let’s Sing our hearts out on old time classics from Charlie Pool, Riley Pucket, Uncle Dave Macon, and many more! Song Sheets, harmony ideas and back-up playing suggestions provided!

Saturday, 8:30-9:30 p.m.

For everyone at the Minnesota Bluegrass Fall Jam and GMUG! Come Jam on Old time Songs and Tunes with the Canote Brothers! Jamming with the Canotes is really fun!

Bill Cagley - Saturday

Beginner Jam - Jam
Saturday, 1:00-2:00 p.m


Bill's jams are THE gold standard for beginner jams. He is a true master at getting players into jamming. Many of the very experienced players at Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association events got their start at Bill's very fun and encouraging jams! This is a great event to find out what it is like to jam with a broad mix of instruments.

U Can Jug or Nots - Saturday

From the Jam to a Band - Workshop
Saturday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Have you ever wondered about forming and maintaining a "fun" band? This is all about the basics of putting together a band that is a highly enjoyable activity, not necessarily a high level performing band. Yes, performances, but not a make it or break it, "let's quit our day job" endeavor.
