To assure that ukulele players from absolute beginners to advanced players have Workshops, Concerts, Jams, and an Open Mic appropriate for their Skill Level, the 2023 GMUG has four skill levels. Plus, We will have more than one workshop at the same time in the Saturday time slots to accommodate the different skill levels.

Del Rey - 6:00-6:50 p.m. - Ukulele Jug Band Party
Jugband and blues songs orchestrated for the ukulele, with playing and singing parts for several levels of player. We’ll work on getting that old-timey sound on your uke, with the right rhythm, chord positions and where to find the melody. Plus we’ll try and listen to each other and play together. We’ll add parts for basic chords, strumming, picking and singing. Basic level: be comfortable and confident with first position chords and able to keep time while changing between them. Preferred: Re-entrant (high G) tuning. Level: You are comfortable with first position chords and can keep time while changing them. By ear, no TAB. |

U Can Jug or Nots Jug Band Concert - 7:00-7:45 p.m.
Now, it's time to hear jug band music at its' best. The U Can Jug or Nots are the two time winners of the Duluth, Minnesota Jug Band Concert. Fun ukulele (and other) instrument fun. Did I mention that jug band music and the U Can Jug or Nots are fun?!? |

Open Mic with Dale and Brenda Moe - 8-10 p.m. or so!
Time for ukulele players to strut their stuff! Keep in mind, most often the Open Mic participants are NOT pros. All levels are welcome and frequently seen and heard during an Open Mic. We all make a mistake now and then, but at GMUG, we celebrate trying! Those in the audience are your best friends when you are on stage. They know and understand what you are feeling and support your every note. So, this is your chance to give Open Mic a go! And, STRUT YOUR STUFF! |

Learn and Actually Play the Ukulele - Step 1 - Dale and Brenda Moe - Conf Rm B
A 3 Step approach to learning and playing the ukulele From an absolute beginner to a ukulele player jamming with others. Dale and Brenda are masters at making all of this understandable, non-threatening and FUN! Step 1 is for new or newer players, or those who are just getting back into playing a ukulele. Loaner ukuleles are available. Indicate that you would like a loaner when you fill out your registration.

Fingerstyle Ukulele Picking - Mike Cramer - Regency
There's more options to accompaniment than just strumming. We'll cover basic right-hand techniques that will get you off to a great start. We will also learn right-hand patterns that can be applied to songs of various styles. Preferred: Mike will be using Low G, but either high or Low G tuning is fine for this workshop. |

Blue Uke: Finger Picking the Blues - Del Rey - Regency
Many of the great 1920-30s guitar and banjo blues tunes sit beautifully on the ukulele. There are also African American ukesters like Lemon Nash of Louisiana and Rabbit Muse of Virginia, with distinctive styles on traditional and standard jazz material. Level: You are able to keep a 4/4 beat with your thumb while picking a syncopated melody with your fingers. |

will take you into playing songs with the skills you learned in Step 1. You must register for this 3 hour workshop and attend all 3 hours. This is NOT a "drop in" workshop. Registration button by Step 1 above. |

Minneapolis Youth Ukulele Orchestra Concert
12:00-12:30 p.m. - Regency
The Minneapolis youth ukulele orchestra is a fun opportunity for young people to play fun songs in a group. We work hard, but have a playful approach, incorporating kazoos, singing, clapping and egg shakers. Participants learn how to play collaboratively with each other, at the same tempo, listening to one another and having harmonizing parts. We rehearse weekly in a large group and will have three performances this year. The mission of the Minneapolis Youth Orchestra is to promote access to the world of music through ukulele education and performance opportunities. The vision is to expand access to ukulele education and performance through community outreach programs and partnerships. |

2:15 to 3:15 p.m. - Keep Moving on Up - Step 3 -
Conf Rm B - Dale and Brenda Dale and Brenda will take you into playing songs with others using the skills you learned in Steps 1 & 2. It's jamming time! This is where the fun really ramps up! You must register for this 3 hour workshop and attend all 3 hours. This is NOT a "drop in" workshop. Registration button by Step 1 above. |

2:15 to 3:15 - Salty Dog - Del Rey - Room TBA
Let Me be Your Salty Dog is a great introduction to the I VI II V I progression that is a part of so many blues, ragtime and swing songs. Don’t know what “ I VI II V I “ means? At this workshop you’ll learn to hear it and understand it, plus get a great party song under your fingers with melody and fun variations. Preferred: Re-entrant (high G) tuning. Level: You are comfortable with first position chords and can keep time while changing them. By ear, no TAB. |

Time to build a strong foundation in blues playing! We will explore common blues progressions, chord voicings, turnarounds, and accompaniment patterns that will help you dig deeper into the blues. Preferred: Mike will be using Low G, but either high or Low G tuning is fine for this workshop. |

3:30-4:30 p.m. — Jazzing Up The Blues - Mike Cramer -Regency
Want to spice up your blues playing? In this workshop we'll cover simple tweaks to basic chords adding a cool sophistication to your blues harmony. We'll look at differences between the basic 12 bar blues progression and its jazzier counterpart. At the end you'll walk away with new chord voicings and progressions that will have you jazzing up the blues. Preferred: Mike will be using Low G, but either high or Low G tuning is fine for this workshop. |

3:30-4:30 p.m. - Uke and Me - Annie Loch - Conf Rm B
The Uke and Me workshop will talk about and demonstrate activities participants can do with their kids or grandkids when the kids are getting into the ukulele. Ways to help teach them. Basic fingerpicking songs they can do together and one chord strumming songs. The Uke and Me workshop will give grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles - those who are not used to teaching ukulele to children - ideas for how they can hook their own young people on playing the uke with them. Simple songs (or ways to simplify songs), songs all kids seem to enjoy, some basic finger-picking songs they can do together. |
