Outdoor SD Jam (SD = Socially Distanced)
What a gorgeous day! 82 - sunny - comfortable breeze! You can also see our audience enjoyed the music. Take a look the videos to see a young lady dancing to the music.
Videos
Check the social distancing. Generally, the SD works well. Today, because of jets flying over, lawn mowing, a maintenance tractor, and some noisy kids toys, we had some trouble hearing others.

However, a fun ukulele jam absolutely beats the heck out of no jamming!

I try my best to get large photos of all the jammers. However, if you don't lead a song or talk much, I'm not able to get a large photo of you. So, from now on, I'm counting on you to lead a song or talk long enough that I can immortalize you. For now, just look above the large photos, and you are most likely featured there! If you are interested in doing a Front Yard Jam in my Richfield neighborhood some evening soon, please let me know. Like the one Cid and the crew did in the video below. 7 p.m. at the St. Louis Park Veteran's Memorial Amphitheater Wolfe Park at 3700 Monterey Drive - just south of the Recreation Center.  If it's rainy we are in the ROC (Recreation Outdoor Center) to the immediate west side of the SLP Recreation Center.  It would be fun to see some "Ukulele folks" if they are comfortable coming out; there's lots of room to space out.

From Cid Skaalrud - Cid's Front Yard Jam
Hi Tony -
Hope your "Summer of COVID-19" is going well as we all re-invent our routines! U Can Jug or Nots played in my front yard again, and this time we posted on NextDoor and got a slightly bigger little audience in my front yard. People are so appreciative for a chance to do something different close to home. I'd recommend it to other players. If we can do it, U Can, too!
Picture
Click on the photo above for a little video snippet of our front yard concert, on a beautiful, breezy Sunday afternoon.
We've been doing a bit more gospel music if anyone is curious to see what we've been up to - we have played virtually in a church service three times this summer. We pre-recorded playing to an empty sanctuary. Its fun to see what opportunities reveal themselves in these very strange times.
- Best,
Cid

It was a little "nippy" for a jam, but you can see that we seemed to carry on just fine. You can also see our audience enjoyed the music. Check the video to see Ali and Noelle swaying with the music. Also, check out the social distancing. And yet, we could hear each other just fine, and we had a fun ukulele jam! More jamming please . . .!

Outdoor SD Jam (SD = Socially Distanced)  - July 3
My apologies to Rhonda…as I cut her off from the pic…she was on the far left next to Suzanne.

The Outdoor Jam on Friday went well!
  • We had a total of ten jammers including:  Rhonda, Suzanne, Dwight, Lynn B, Bruce M, Jana, Mark (my buddy), Bruce (drummer who lives next door to the park), Terrie and me.
  • We sang a good mix of songs including a couple of kids songs for 2 little girls and there mom who wondered over to the shelter to watch us play.
  • This week we had the whole shelter to ourselves…which was great!
  • Everyone is aware of the shift to Wednesday Outdoor Jams from Friday.
  • I encouraged those who do not normally attend the evening BUG or Americana jams to download all of the songs…as I believe a few of us want to play some songs from those libraries.

Outdoor SD Jam (SD = Socially Distanced)
Thanks to Jam Leader Steve Forslund!
Hi Tony - A quick recap from our outside jam yesterday at Lake Harriett:
  • 8 jammers in all:  Duane, Linda R, Jana F, Lynn B, Bruce (from Groth), Mark (my friend of mine who has come to a few jams), Bruce (drummer who lives in house next to park), and me.
  • We first met under a large canopy of trees 15 yards away from the picnic shelter because the shelter was being used by 3 small groups for coffee/breakfast, etc.
  • Light rain began about 45 minutes into the jam, so we shifted into the shelter as some space had opened up by then
  • A few young kids were in the shelter, so we quickly pivoted and sang 3-4 kids songs from the yellow book...the kids and the parents all enjoyed that!
  • After that, we hit our "stride" (special thanks to Linda, Lynn and Duane) for helping to lead/sing songs...on many of the songs, we actually sounded pretty good!!
  • A mother was having a birthday party for her daughter (Olivia) in the park with her friends...she came over and asked us if we could sing the "birthday song" to her which we did.  We also played the short version of "You Are My Sunshine" for the birthday girl...Duane went over and let her play the "C" chord on this uke.He gave her some simple instructions on how to hold, strum. He planted a seed for a future uke player!!
  • I hope/think everyone had a fun time at the jam

We will jam next Friday, July 3, if there is enough interest! - Be well! - Steve

1st Outdoor SD Jam (SD = Socially Distanced)
Picture
It had to happen! Steve Forslund suggested we do an outdoor socially distanced jam. So, as a trial, we invited a few jammers, and we jammed! Our test Outdoor SD Jam took place at Beard's Plaisance Minneapolis Park, just west of Lake Harriet, this morning from 10 a.m. to noon. We had some very stringent Covid-19 rules.
Picture

COVID19 PRECAUTIONS - We will distance at least 6 feet. Since we are outdoors, masks will be used at each jammer's discretion. We’ll keep the size of our group to 8. If there are more than 8, we will form a second group.

Will this jam be safe? Since I am in the high risk group and because I care for you, I will strictly enforce the CDC recommendations. - Tony
The Result?
It was really great to jam "live and in person" again! We are planning to do this on a weekly basis. I am not going to send the Outdoor SD Jam notice to entire Twin Cities Ukulele Club 330+ person email list. However, if you would like to receive an event notice about our weekly Outdoor SD Jams, click here and let me know you would like to know about the jams. Put Outdoor Jam in the email subject.

Now that it’s warmer we’ve been able to get together and play outdoors together, but this was our big project before it warmed up.

How do They do it that Way? We finally did it with multi- screen technology, each of us recording separately and then some digital magic to pull it all together. It only took about 2 months COVID time, so that's probably much shorter in regular human years. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks?

Keep strumming and singing... Go for the high note! - Cid

As we reach over two months of Sheltering in Place, we face not only the COVID-19 challenges and fears. Unfortunately, the past week has shown us the horror of racial discrimination and brutality. We need to change!

During this time, there have been challenges for all of us. Here are mine. At 73 and with a few risk factors (!), I am concerned. Not scared, but certainly careful. While Minnesota may be opening up again, I won't be part of that for a while. It's just too risky. And, George Floyd's senseless, brutal and unnecessary killing . . .! What can I even say? It seems so obvious.  This has to stop, and our politicians need to stop politicizing the COVID-19 situation, Floyd's death and the rioting that followed. This website is not for political statements. However, this is my plea for change and love. Now!

And, then there is the ukulele and all my uke friends during all of this. Thank you my friends! Our Zoom Jams have brought much joy to me. Your photos and thoughts make me feel better. And, that little oo-koo-lay-lay (along with Bruce, who seems to like the uke for sleeping, not playing and singing) are with me to comfort me. Ann, even after putting up with me through 52 years of marriage, remains a wonderful companion and friend. And, her Cub curbside pickups have kept us well fed. Thanks to Ann, all of you and my ukuleles (and cats Bruce and Bullwinkle, along with Yellow Lab, Ollie). We will overcome - some day!

Mary McKenna - Love it.

Coco O'Keefe - Seeing everyone plucking through this madness keeps me sane. I have found so many opportunities I am actually really busy and having fun!

Tony Anthonisen - Creating and updating this Uke in Place webpage has been really fun for me. I love seeing what my ukulele friends are doing! This evening, I sat on the patIo playing my Martin 2M soprano and singing a bit of bluegrass, Bob Wills and John Prine. I can live like this - at least for now.

My best friend, Jeff, and I went to college together in the last century (1964-65). And, we have gotten together once a week ever since. With social distancing, there are no restaurants. So, we get together at Fremont Park in Richfield on a picnic table. We sit diagonally on opposite ends. He brought Burger King for lunch today. Guess what I did while waiting for him?

Pat Solstad - Who is definitely cheating on the date.
This photo was taken a few years ago in Waikiki, shortly after a WONDERFUL blood orange margarita at Tommy Bahamas. We were walking back to our condo and discovered a sweet little ukulele shop on the way...The photo always makes me smile. This is cheating a bit, so don't post if you think it's inappropriate. - Thanks, Pat

OK Pat - Here are the conditions for posting this photo. Next time you go to Hawaii, you have to take the Twin Cities Ukulele Club Photo Librarian with you. ME!  - Keep me posted!

The weather is spectacular...time for some quality “deck time” to play some uke for a crowd of one...our dog, Teddy!

First time in 40 years I haven’t had a day job, so looking forward to picking up my uke more and working on scales, finger picking and a clear, clean Bb chord!
Nice ukulele! Cool photo too!  >>>>>>>

I love 71 degrees, no humidity and no mosquitos! I think that if we all wish hard enough, this will actually happen year around. Every day!

Why do the neighbors cover their ears when I play and sing on the front steps? Am I missing something?

Tom Ehlinger, as usual, did a great job of leading about 28 "wild and crazy" jammers. Also, thanks to all who led songs! Well, what the heck, welcome to all the jammers too! On Wisconsin! Minnesota, hats off to you!

The U Can Jug or Nots from Gary Erickson - 4-21-20

Tony - here is what our Jug Band did as a play in place. We had fun doing it. We used Zoom and Cid did some magic with the sound because of the delays in it. We did do some lip sync stuff but had fun with it. - Gary

Here’s another photo - this is fun!

I enjoyed the [Zoom] jam last night. Tom does a terrific job, and it’s a new and interesting experience, though nothing beats the real thing, does it?

Be well, take care, and thanks again for all you’re doing.  I’m taking full advantage, spending hours learning and listening to these fine teachers and performers - THANK YOU again and again.

I have decided that I am not willing to social distance myself from my ukulele. However, I am taking one precaution . . .!

I have heard that there is a ukulele player who says you can solve just about any problem with a new uke. Maybe if we all bought a new ukulele, Covid-19 would take a once and for all hike! Hmmmmmm!

Too much time, too many choices - I now have a tenor Uke tuned like a re-enterant baritone,  and a baritone tuned like a low G Uke, and a tenor guitar tuned like a mandolin - by the time this is over I won’t have a clue as to what I’m playing

Tony's Note - All of this and not a single word about a Kazoo. Is Tom OK?

Nancy Cox - 4-14-20

Starting March 29th I started doing porch concerts for my neighbors at our senior cooperative in Minnetonka. Every Thursday and Sunday, weather permitting, I work up about a half hour of music and take advanced requests from others. We maintain our distance and fortunately my voice is booming enough for all to hear. It’s one small thing I can do to feel like I can bring some joy and make a difference in this wild time.

Had to send a collage since I’ve been so busy during lockdown.
  1. Easter jam
  2. Grateful it was warm enough to spend the day on our 3 season porch for The 4/11 Mini Uke fest
  3. Jam with the Bloomington Chorale Uke every Sat at 7 (Had to have my Live at the Guthrie neon sign glowing)
  4. Daily play along with Petey Mac (every day about 1:15) ‘AS THE UKE TURNS.' Petey's free book - www.Peteymack.weebly.com.
Thanks to all of you for keeping me happy & busy during these strange times!

Many thanks to Tyler and Devin for making this wonderful Tyde ukulele for me.  It has several uncommon features built with non-traditional techniques.  It is great to play, during these stay-at-home times.  Looking forward to the time when we can enjoy music together again.

Steve Forslund Goofing Around - 4-13-20
Hi Everyone! - Steve Forslund here…goofing around with this app…it’s called Acapella. It allows you to add “layers” (either you or others) to a song…this is just a screen shot. If you want to see the full videos of my first attempts of this app, I did upload a couple to the Twin City Uke Club Facebook page. Buyer beware…this app will charge you $10 per month (automatically)…but might be worth it to some of you! Be well and be safe!

This one is a bit of a story, but well worth the read and photos.
THE PLAN - Received Friday, March 20
Picture
Just wanted to share with you about a birthday party I'm going to today!!!!!!! I'm in a "church ladies" once a month dinner group......about 10 of us. Been friends at church for many years. So, 1 of the ladies had a great idea to meet in our church parking lot to celebrate birthday of the lady who organized our 1st get together years ago.
We're to bring a chair, beverage and chips or whatever for ourself, and she's providing the tape measure so we keep our proper social distance. AND whoever has a ukulele should bring it along to play "Happy Birthday" and "You are my sunshine" in the key of C........cuz she doesn't want us to bring any sheet music.

Definitely click on the images below to enlarge them.

THE RESULT - Received Saturday, March 21

OH MY WORD!!!!!!
I maybe shouldn't tell you this Tony, but I will.

So, the church parking lot party.......I got all dressed up in my "Goofy" shirt, neon yellow tights, "Goofy" sox.......with picture of the real Disney Goofy on the sox. I had my Ukulele hat on from Silver Creek....brought my ukulele...... my friend said "no sheet music," so memorize the chords.   Well, I took permanent marker and wrote the chords on my right arm. And, I'm at the church waiting, waiting......and waiting. No one comes. Oh, I'd also taped to the inside of my van the music for the 2 songs.  I'd also made a bright green birthday sign and taped it inside my van. I'm ready to party. No one shows up. So, I sent some pictures to the birthday girl. She sends text to me and asks if I'm at the church now???? I said YES. She calls me and is laughing hysterically. Her birthday isn't until MONDAY......today is Saturday.
I misunderstood the text about the party. And that's all I know today.

TAKE CARE MY FRIEND TONY - Landa

MY THOUGHTS - Gee Landa! It sounded like a good plan to me! Thanks for a well needed "COVID-19 quarantine SD" day brightener!
