RUG Roots Jams

The Twin Cities Ukulele Club began with Bluegrass Ukulele Group (BUG) jams at the Homestead Pickin' Parlor in Richfield, Minnesota well over a decade ago. Over time we expanded BUG to include a broader variety of Roots music with a new name, the Roots Ukulele Group. RUG!

Effective Friday, March 14, 2025, RUG will be picking and singing at the Burnsville Senior Center every Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

What Is Roots Music - The music in the RUG jam is from the traditions that make up the American roots musical ethos; specifically those sounds that are merged from from both old and new bluegrass, blues, cowboy, country, folk, and rockabilly music. HERE ARE SOME OF THE SONGS!

What is a Jam - Jam sessions are often used by musicians as a social gathering to share the music they love as well as explore new music. Jams are fun times to play music with others. These are jams, not lessons or workshops, but we will often touch on some "how to's" to help us play better.  Plus, the ukulele, and Roots music in general, is so easy to play that even if you have never played before, we’ll show you simple chords to get you playing along right away. You do not have to do the fancy stuff!

Who - The jam emphasis will be on ukulele. This RUG jam is geared for adult and teen advanced beginners to advanced uke players. Jammers should be aware that we will be singing and playing some songs that are more complex, have more chords and more difficult chords, as well as songs with Nashville Number System number (not letter) chords at the RUG jams. We will also be doing quite a bit of fingerpicking. RUG jams are moderate+ skill level jams led by Twin Cities Ukulele Club jam leaders. Click here for what you will eventually need to participate in jams. RUG jams are free and open to the public.
Songs - SONGS WILL BE SHOWN ON THE SCREEN! We use songs in the Twin Cities Ukulele Club 1A ALL SONGS Dropbox folder, the Favorite Old-Time American Songs for Ukulele book, or songs provided in advance to the jam leader by email. We will also routinely use the Nashville Number System (NNS) and play fiddle tunes from TAB available on Dropbox. We will not use the Daily Ukulele books at the RUG jams.

Why do we use the Favorite Old-Time American Songs Book?
  • Many/most Roots sing-alongs, song circles, strums and jams do not have sheets with all the song/tune info and lyrics. The participants learn the songs or tunes over time and then, play the chords, sing the lyrics and/or play the melody at jams. Ukulele jammers often ask how to get ready to sit in a jam with others. The Favorite Old-Time book is a great way to get ready to play in a jam.

The Favorite Old-Time book breaks the songs or tunes into two sections or pages. This is why we chose it.

  • The first section or page has ALL the info about the song, including Staff, Key, Time Signature, Melody Notes, Chord Names, Chord Shapes, Lyrics, and Tablature (TAB). On the first, you learn all about and practice the song or tune. Get it ALL in your head so you really know it.
  • The second section or page has ONLY lyrics. Once you really know the song from the first section or page, play it from the second. This is an excellent way to truly learn a song.

How do you get all of this in your head?
  1. First, learn the melody so you can hum it well. Youtube is a great resource.
  2. Second, learn the chords and play them with the melody. From the first section or page.
  3. Third, sing the lyrics with the melody and chords. From the first section or page.
  4. Finally, while looking at the second section or page, put it all together.
  5. Oh yes, practice, practice, practice makes perfect or at least good enough to play at a jam without chord and lyric sheets in front of you. All you need to know is the key and the NNS should enable you to play with others even if you don't know the song or tune.

Because of a generous gift in memory of our friend ukulele player Don Venne, we have a great projector and screen. As a result, we will show the lyrics and chords for songs played at most Twin Cities Ukulele Club jams, as well as other club events. Thanks Mary Rose!
