What are the Wednesday Noon MPtB Jams?

Same 1st and 3rd Wednesdays MPtB Technique Sessions
  • Moderate paced ukulele jam/practice session led by Linda Ruehle, Rhonda Laurie, Tom Ehlinger, Tom Sweeney, Duane Gemelke. The jam focus will be on helping all jammers improve their technical skills. Ensembles, playing from TAB, interesting strumming patterns and working on arrangements of songs will be the crux of the Technique Sessions. The jam leaders will select, prepare, hand out and send out songs for the jams, and then, work on these songs in greater depth. These are the same sessions with the same great leaders that have been held at Schmitt on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays.

New 2nd and 4th Wednesdays MPtB Freestyle Jams

  • Moderate paced ukulele jam led by Twin Cities Ukulele Club jam leaders and session jammers. The jam emphasis will be on helping all jammers improve their overall advanced jamming and participative group ukulele skills. The focus of these MPtB Freestyle Jams with be holding a jam as if the jammers are playing and singing freestyle. No song books. The jam leaders and participants will select, prepare and send out songs for the jams so the jammers can learn them. We'll talk about hearing chord changes, using the Nashville Numbering System (1, 4, 5), and how to handle the mistakes we all make. Finally, we will really play and sing the songs "freestyle" using our own knowledge and resources. Yes, participants can have a copy of the songs in front of them until they learn the songs, but we will stress moving away from the written materials in a timely manner. You will be surprised at how much you already know.

High G vs. Low G Tuning - Either is fine. However, the Wednesday Noon MPtB Jams will include playing melodies. “Having that lower string in a low G tuning allows one to have a few extra lower notes to complete the scale and therefore extends the melodic range of the ukulele.” This makes a big difference when playing in some keys, like G. Click here for a good description of low G tuning.
